How do Wonderland and SDD connect in 2023?
Written by Martijn van der Does and Molly Rooyakkers
The WONDERLAND Team began focusing on Sustainable Digital Design in 2020, after reading articles such as "Why your internet habits are not as clean as you think" which opened our eyes to the environmental impact of our work in the digital space. The internet is responsible for approximately 3.7% of global carbon emissions each year, which amounts to about 1.4 gigatons of carbon emissions in 2021.
Sustainable Digital Design started as an initiative from our development team to reduce the amount of data required when loading a website, thereby reducing the website's carbon footprint.
Since then, Sustainable Digital Design has evolved into a learning and community-based platform that shares tips, methods, and techniques for reducing the carbon emissions of websites and digital experiences. This process allows us to continuously evolve our understanding of the impact of digital technology on the planet. Here, we write:
Our own articles, such as "The Impact of Digital Hardware on the Environment".
Conduct interviews with creatives, like "Shifting from Short- to Long-Term Impact with Abb-D Taiyo".
Feature the work of external writers, such as Vaishinavi Bachala's article, "Should Search Engines Prioritise Green-Hosted Websites".
How have our learnings from SDD impacted our work at Wonderland?
We've created an internal checklist that outlines a range of sustainable and accessibility practices to be implemented for each project. We work closely with our clients at each stage of the project to determine which practices can be feasibly integrated into their project, taking into account their unique circumstances and goals. By doing so, we ensure that each project is tailored to meet their specific needs, while also implementing sustainable and accessible design practices. Many of our checklist items are also available in the SDD Cheatsheets.
To further the SDD mission, we actively seek out clients who share our values and are committed to implementing a sustainable and accessible design. We believe that branding and design can be powerful tools for promoting the sustainable mission of others. These clients are often more open to implementing SDD and accessibility practices.

Introducing: Learning by Doing It
Wonderland Designer and Strategist, Michelle Se Yoon Kee, created ‘Learning By Doing It (LBDI)’, an anonymous platform for sharing valuable lessons learned through sexual experiences. The platform aims to bring a humane perspective to sexual education and diversify our understanding of what sex can be by presenting unique and different perspectives. By sharing honest and vulnerable stories, LBDI presents a more comprehensive picture of what sex means to the wider public and helps people see similarities rather than differences.
LBDI was selected by Wonderland in 2021 for our annual Talent Program. A year later, after a full rebrand, design, and development, LBDI is ready to launch.

Should we worry more about short-term AI risk or long-term AI risk?
A new Coca-Cola Ad used stable diffusion to create incredible imagery.
For the ones that don’t know what stable diffusion is; stable diffusion is a deep learning, text-to-image model that uses AI to turn text into images.
