Our Perspective on the Evolving Landscape of Branding
Happy new year, from our team to yours. A year riddled with geopolitical, economical, and social challenges has gone by, leaving us in awe for 2023. In our ever-changing, fast-paced world, predicting what’s to come has become challenging, if not impossible. Even so, there is still immense value in understanding our recent past and forecasting what the year ahead holds. We’ve picked the brains of our brightest for their insights and predictions on how the geopolitical climate, current events, social issues and big themes such as new emerging technologies and climate change will influence the world of branding and the work we produce in the years to come.
AI, AI & AI
Already, just two weeks into the new year, and it can feel impossible to scroll the internet without coming across something AI related. There’s text-to-image AI, copywriting AI, and even 3D modelling AI (as you will see below). It feels like what was a pipe dream that was talked about casually over the past year or two has suddenly hit the internet and is taking it by storm. In short, AI is a reality, and it’s here to stay.
With the shift, it got us thinking: what does this mean for the creative industries? As a creative studio, we take enormous pride in the work that we produce for our clients, such as Drylaw and Wax Poetics, and our own SDD. We’re always looking to push boundaries and create something new and unique, something that grabs the user’s attention and makes them stop for a moment and say WOW. But, with AI shifting from being a buzzword to a reality, it’s made us ask what the future looks like.
To our mind, creativity can only be amplified by AI for the simple reason that there will always be a place for human curiosity and exploration in the creative process. Creatives learned to work with new tools like Photoshop and Illustrator when they first came on the scene in the 80s and early 90s, and now they’re a mainstay of the industry. We learned to work collaboratively through tools like Figma and Miro throughout the pandemic, and so too will we learn to amplify creativity through AI. What a copywriting AI starts, a human will refine and finish. What a text-to-image AI produces, a human will draw inspiration from it and amplify the idea. As far as we’re concerned, this is just the next step in the creative process.
